How federal SNAP cuts are threatening the survival of NYC’s bodegas

New York City's bodegas play a vital role in providing food to underserved neighborhoods. Recent changes to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) have cost approximately 26,500 residents benefits, threatening these bodegas' revenue. New SNAP work requirements, effective March 1, impose penalties for non-compliance and significantly affect the Bronx, particularly immigrant-owned bodegas. Bodegas account for 44% of SNAP retailers and 5% of redemptions. Continued benefit losses may lead to closures in these communities. Affected individuals are encouraged to reapply for benefits or seek assistance through 718-SNAP-NOW or the ACCESS HRA app.
